My Dimension

Walking Stars

Hollywood. My childhood was a hop skip and a jump to and from the stars. And other dimensions. I dedicate these steps to the genius of Rod Serling and The Twilight Zone.

Ours, Poetica Corvidae

License To Travel
by
Kit Kennedy

The boy's hand releases crows
folded precisely. Between fingers
paper is time, exploration
of the untested

Flight happens without knowledge
of thermodynamics, orinthology.
No experience with compass
because he has no fear

that ground is failure. He came out
of the ground of his mother.

Simple, the pattern. Arc. Descent.
The absence of light across light.

He tells no one
where he and the crows have been.

Take from the Green Poet Press anthology A Bird Black As The Sun: California Poets on Crows & Ravens (2011).

Camino del Pasado

It Was Neither A Long, Long Time Ago Nor Far, Far Away

Keep Calm

... and Summer On.

This month there are two full moons, also known as a "Blue Moon." You can read more about the next Blue Moon here.

In the meantime, i believe i've found a most delightful way of chillin' on warm summer evenings.

Salud!

Gotta Dance!

... did i mention i'll be taking tango lessons soon? Tango. La música de mis abuelos. The music of my grandparents. As a kid i would hear my moms talk of how beautiful it was to watch her parents--my late grandparents Ana Mercedes and Victor Manuel Portillo--dance the tango. And i always knew i wanted to learn someday. This rhythm's been calling me for some time. Just listen to this classic by tango icon Carlos Gardel and you may understand.

The passion. The fierceness. The tango!

This Path ...

... trees greet me along Riverside Drive as i arrive to work.

Four months since i was hired as a temp (now a regular full-time employee) at Warner Brothers in their VIP studio tour facilities. Yes, i was one of those L.A. natives who never knew the WB in Burbank had such a tour. No, it's nothing like Universal Studios ... but 95% of guests--tourists from every U.S. state and corner of the globe--say it's "Awesome" and better than Universal's.

At just a little over half an hour on two buses (or, approximately a five minute freeway drive), I'm blessed to have this gig right now. After all, I spent five and a half long months searching for a job. This path has led me to this place at this moment for a reason ...

Jazz Spirit

Ravi Coltrane

Personnel:
Ravi Coltrane (tenor sax), David Virelles (piano), Dezron Douglas (bass--pictured), E.J. Strickland (drums)

... it had been maybe four years since i'd been to the Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood. I first went to see the sun ten years ago (when Catalina's was in it's original and legendary location on Cahuenga, south of Hollywood Blvd ...

Reluctant Blogger Check: I have to start writing more and more--about jazz, about everything ...)

On this opening night of a four night gig, the quartet played just one set (instead of the usual two) for the two hours. What an unexpected treat! Ravi and his quartet were on fire from the opening number. Selections were mostly from his new album Spirit Fiction. Although my favorite moment of the evening came from their funky interpretation of Monk's "Epistrophy". The sun, now 47, has a fuller and more personal sound than when i first heard him live early in 2002. I wonder if anyone noticed as he alluded to his father for a few seconds during one number. Or, maybe we're all a little guilty of putting an ear to a sun ray while chasing the 'Trane.

Media City Swag?

Mo Self Portrait

After Shave

... it's the first of the month and that means a self portrait. And, this time, a shave! I hadn't seen my cheeks since October of last year (and longer than that since i'd seen my chin!). I told my 3-year old nephew--a.k.a, Captain Jack Sparrow--i was growing a pirate mustache. Aarrrgh!!
